The Saboteur (Review)

December 30, 2009 by Soo-Doe-NeemNo Comments

Welcome to the city of Paris. The time period is set in World War II and the Nazis have invaded and have occupied all of Paris, much to the chagrin of the citizens.

Your job? As a saboteur (as hinted by the game’s title) you take on the role of Sean Devlin, an Irish racer turned resistance fighter, as he pinpoints Nazi weak spots and disrupts them in any way possible (most end up in blowing the place up with dynamite or shooting at some big shot Nazi) and restore morale and faith in the citizens of Paris.

Well that sums up the basic gist of the game. Saboteur is a third-person stealth action game with its game play slightly resembling Grand Theft Auto and Assassin’s Creed. The player is able to explore Paris in its entirety, thanks to its open world, and complete missions in order to weaken the Nazi occupation. Saboteur is a unique and thrilling game to play thanks mostly to its visuals. For example, parts of Paris that are under heavy occupation by Nazi forces will be in black and white when Sean visits them. When Sean manages to weaken the Nazi influence in that area, then colour would return to the area, signifying the citizens’ hope has returned and is now inspired to oppose the occupation whenever they can.

Unlike many World War II inspired video games that have floated in the market, you do not have to worry about the repetitive shooting and killing of Nazi soldiers that the other games may suffer from. In Saboteur, using guns and shooting down Nazis is considered a generally bad idea. This is one game in which you cannot wield two heavy machine guns to do a Rambo and mow down waves of infantry units. In Saboteur you have to use wits and skill to evade the Nazi in order to infiltrate and sabotage many of their vital buildings or areas. Climbing buildings, donning Nazi uniforms as disguises and sneaking around is the best way to go around in this game.

But sneaking around doesn’t necessarily mean that Sean cannot get caught. Nazis will notice if Sean is doing anything even remotely suspicious such as climbing buildings and will raise the alarm that will bring every Nazi soldier to hunt him down unless he can evade them (which is difficult to do).

Saboteur is a good game but has been released to the PC version with bugs that will affect ATI card users, but a beta patch is out that fixes most of the glitches although some still remain. But be sure that Saboteur will provide you with hours of good fun sneaking around and blowing stuff up.
